How far in advance should a visa renewal application be started?

Most immigration advisors recommend starting a visa renewal at least 3 months (12-13 weeks) before the current visa expires. In practice, the right lead time depends on the visa category, the country, and current processing backlogs -- some UK Skilled Worker visa renewals are processed in 8 weeks on the standard service, but Home Office processing times fluctuate and the priority service costs significantly more.

For employers, the practical consequence is that an HR system which only flags upcoming visa expiries at 30 days is already too late for most renewal pathways. 90 days (13 weeks) is the minimum for most work visas; 6 months is recommended for more complex categories, spouse/dependent visas, and any application requiring gathering new supporting documents from overseas. A reminder at 30 days is a progress check, not an action trigger. The action trigger needs to be at 90-180 days.
